St. Petersburg women & time, population and map of St. Petersburg, Russia

While Moscow is the business capital of Russia, St. Petersburg is the country's cultural capital. Peter the Great founded the city in 1703 as a "window to the West."  Peter brought in the greatest architects from all of Western Europe to build his great city. Each of the czars who followed Peter added on to the city's grandeur. St. Petersburg is truly one of Europe's finest city and is often called "the Venice of the North." The city's population of 5 million residences recently celebrated St. Petersburg's 300th birthday. St. Petersburg is filled with picturesque attractions, below is a short summary of but a few.

The Peterhof: The Peterhof, also known as the "the Russian Versailles" and "the Capital of Russian Fountains", is a gorgeous royal estate lying on the shores of the Gulf of Finland. The grounds cascade down from the Grand Palace to the sea. The Grand Palace, originally built for Peter himself, is beautifully preserved and boasts one of the largest collections of fountains in the world. Peterhof means "Peter's yard" or "Peter's home" in German. With its beautiful architecture and equally beautiful women, St. Petersburg is truly a feast for the eyes that must be experienced to believe!

Peter & Paul Fortress: Built in the early days of the city, it was the home to the log cabin where Peter directed the building of his great city.  Its original purpose was to defend the newly acquired lands from the Swedes; today its beautiful cathedral is the resting place for most of the Russian Czars.

Sir Isaac's Cathedral: The famous French architect Ricard de Montferrand designed Sir Isaac's Cathedral, whose beautiful dome reigns majestically over the St. Petersburg skyline. This exquisite neo-classical cathedral took over 40 years to be constructed. Solid red granite columns that each weighs over 80 tons help to support this massive structure.  Sir Isaac's Cathedral can accommodate over 14,000 worshipers. Those who climb the cathedral's 300 stairs are rewarded by a breathtaking view of the city.

Church of Our Savior on the Spilled Blood: This magnificent Russian-style church was built on the spot where Emperor Alexander II was assassinated in 1881.  Modeled after St. Basil's Cathedral in Moscow's Red Square, its facades are lined with ceramic tiles and colored with glazed bricks. The interior is decorated in Italian marbles and countless semi-precious stones.

Palace Square: The Palace Square is at the center of St. Petersburg.  For over 200 years the Russian empire was ruled from this location. Truly one of Europe's greatest squares, it is lined with beautiful monuments celebrating Russia's victory over Napoleon. The square features the Winter Place where the Russian Czars ruled from for over 150 years. Today it is home to the magnificent Hermitage Museum which occupies six building filled with some of the finest art ever assembled in one location.
